A year and a half in….

We are a year and a half into our hosting journey at “The Cabins.” Owning and operating DRC has been an adventure! So many ups and downs along the way. Clearly, the best part of this endeavor for me, is meeting our guests and hearing their stories. From the fishermen and women who come to take advantage of the awesome fishing on Pool 9 to the group of motorcycle riders who make an annual visit, I really enjoy connecting with our people. We have hosted family gatherings, construction workers, conservationists and people just looking to lay their head down for the night. Heck, we even had a flagpole salesman spend a few nights here in August! Quite a diverse group of individuals. As we fade out of summer, and head toward fall, we look forward to the duck hunters, deer hunters, diehard open water fishermen, and eventually ice fishermen. Unfortunately, this fall will also bring the closing of the Blackhawk Bridge between De Soto and Lansing. We have already experienced a couple of short term closures in the past, and all I can say is things are going to be tough for the business owners and workers who depend on traffic from both sides of the river. Those of us who depend on tourism have already had cancellations due to the upcoming closure. There is talk of a car ferry possibly being brought in to help ease the situation. Regardless, we are looking at 1.5 years or more without a bridge, while the new bridge is being built.
